We get bombarded with so much stress and craziness in our lives that it’s really important to ‘protect’ ourselves through a spiritual practice that shields us from the stresses and events of the day. If we don’t, we can become bundles of conditioned reflexes acting and reacting to everything that happens around us and lose our sense of inner peace and calm.
I have adopted a spiritual practice for the last couple of years that have helped me move through my day somewhat immune from the ups and downs each day brings.
I would like to offer that you ‘spiritually bookend’ your day – start your day with a short prayer and a 5 minute meditation and end your day the same way and/or with a gratitude practice.
The prayer can go something like: “God, thank you for keeping me happy, healthy, safe and abundant in all aspects of my life. I surrender completely to Your Will”. Then, please sit even if it’s for 5 minutes in silence. If the ‘monkey chatter’ in your brain is a problem, please say a mantra in your head (word you repeat to focus your meditation) and repeat it like ‘Om’ or ‘Love’ and visualize the image of God (whatever you think that looks like – figure, ball of light, etc.) in your mind’s eye. The mind has the need to think and visualize. If we can occupy those 2 faculties through a mantra and visualization of God, we can more effectively silence the mind. I think of prayer as when we speak to God and meditation is when we listen. You may not get answers on the spot during meditation, but things you need to do to further your health and happiness will be shown to you.
At night, you can do the same exercise and maybe add one more thing, a gratitude journal. At the end of every night, jot down 5 things that you are grateful for during the day – these are short bullet points, not long like a novel. Even if you have had a really stressful day, find 5 things, no matter how small. And after making the entry into the journal, go to bed. Your subconscious ruminates on the last thing your mind is exposed to before going to sleep. So, watching the nightly news right before bedtime is probably not the best thing. Wouldn’t it be nice if your subconscious gets to bask in the warmth of your gratitude all night? This will really help center you, give you strength and make you more joyful.
Given the daily stresses we are faced with, you must give yourself the luxury of loving your soul and nurturing your spirit.
I have personally done everything above so I know firsthand it works – when I do the above, I am filled with love and inner peace, no matter what goes on around me. I wish the same for you.
